Everything you need to know before hitting the road from Calgary to the Canadian Rockies
The Calgary-to-Rockies RV Checklist
1. The "Before You Leave the Lot" Check
- The Orientation: Don't leave until you've seen the water pump, water heater, and slide-outs in action
- The Roof Check: RVs are much taller than cars. Note the exact height on a sticky note near the steering wheel
- Tire Pressure: Mountain roads put extra stress on tires; ensure they are at the manufacturer's recommended PSI
- Fluid Levels: Confirm propane, fresh water, and fuel are 100% full
2. Mountain Driving Safety (Class 5 License)
- Engine Braking: When descending steep grades, shift to a lower gear to save your brakes from overheating
- Wind Awareness: The Calgary-to-Lethbridge corridor and mountain passes can have high crosswinds
- Wildlife Protocol: The Icefields Parkway is famous for bears and elk. Pull completely into designated turnouts
3. Campsite Setup (Arrival)
- Level First: Use leveling blocks before opening any slide-outs
- Hookup Order: 1. Electrical with surge protector 2. Water with pressure regulator 3. Sewer (keep black tank valve closed until 2/3 full)
4. Essential Rockies Gear (Pack These!)
- Bear Spray: A must-have for hiking in Banff, Jasper, or Kananaskis
- Layers: Even in July, mountain nights can drop to 5°C
- Downloaded Maps: Cell service is non-existent on large sections of Hwy 93
- Levelling App: Download a "Bubble Level" app on your phone
